The principal of flyingmedicine.com Ltd is Dr David Powell.
David has spent his entire medical career in aviation, starting with 8 years in the Royal New Zealand Air Force where he was in command of the Aviation Medicine Unit. Â He was Chief Medical Officer for Air New Zealand for 12 years, and is still a consultant specialist to Air New Zealand in aviation medicine.
He has a published several papers on fatigue in aircrew, and has consulted internationally to many airlines and other organisations in the area of fatigue risk management. Â David also has a strong interest in the management of alcohol and other drug problems in aviation, and was a member of the advisory board of the US HIMS Program to deal with such problems, as well as the foundation chair of the NZ HIMS programme.
His other main professional interest is in aviation medical education; David is a Senior Lecturer in Aviation Medicine with the University of Otago, and has consulted to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on competency-based training of aviation medical examiners. Â He assembled and ran the first international training course using that competency-based system for aviation medical examiners, in Dubai (annually since 2011). Â He was the consultant aviation medical professional with the NZ Airline Pilots Association 2014-2016.
But aviation remains his foremost passion and holding commercial licences on both helicopters and aeroplanes, David has his headquarters in an aircraft hangar in Ardmore, close to a Cessna 182 and a Robinson 44.
In 2016 David resumed airline work, with Virgin Australia based in Sydney.
